An audit is a systematic review of operations and maintenance practices intended to determine the effectiveness of the safety and health programs at the facility. There are several types of audits that can be conducted at facilities that process or handle hazardous materials.

We cover pre-startup safety audits that are conducted prior to putting a new facility into operation, safety audits conducted on facilities that are in operation, and audits of Process Safety Management (PSM) Programs. Findings are recorded and presented to company management.

The primary components of an audit include the following:
  1. Visual inspection of equipment (to determine if it is properly installed, maintained, and meets industry standards)

  2. Review of operating and maintenance procedures (to determine if they are complete and up-to-date)

  3. Interviews of operations and maintenance personnel (to see if they have specific safety concerns)

  4. Review of training materials and procedures (to determine if proper training is being conducted at proper intervals)

  5. Review of past incidents and near misses (to see if they were related to improper training, mechanical faults, or poor procedures, etc.)
